Ngov Seng Vannak, aged 20, who was from Kompong Chhnang province, was a Computer Science student at Build Bright University between 2004 and 2005. He made a virus named BBU and then tested it on University computers. Later, a virus infected school computers and attacked computers throughout Phnom Penh and provinces.
Vannak also made an agreement with university rector not to test virus on school computer and released it into the public domain. He said that he was studying the textbook and the creation of the virus was just to learn more about computer.
BBU information Teacher was quoted the Cambodia Daily as saying that he is not pleased by the news that the virus has spread, adding that the University does not teach students how to invent viruses because it won’t help them to get jobs and he also criticized the quality of Vannak’s brainchild.
“It was just my research and a way to test my knowledge, and because there was no one creating viruses in Cambodia,” adding that “I think that I can do it as well as those in other countries,” said Vannak, quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.
Keo Kalyan, aka Dee Dee, who is Cambodian blogger and founder of Clogger, said that “At first I just think that it is attacking by virus BBU because when I plug my flash to it and my flash name changed to BBU. So I and my cousin take out IT Magazine to read whether we can find some clues to solve this problem. But now… we have found out that not only BBU is battling with our great grandpa laptop, but also w32.rontokbro.B@mm is attacking too.”
Panharoth left her comment on Vuthasurf’s blog by saying that “It is too bad to invent such BBU virus. It’s disturbed development in this pretty poor country. We should bring this case to the judge. My computer was infected by BBU Virus and it’s ruined my documents and laptop got stuck until I brought it to vendor to format window and reinstall again. It wastes my precious times. I hate that activity, mind. He should test it in hell. I want to ask him whether he is happy when people get complain on his virus? GO HELL.”
Nowadays, Vannak is living in Phnom Penh and working with management information system but he did not show his workplace due to lingering sensitivity.
