Consumer price dropped in October

Ministry of Planning released the consumer price index (CPI) that the price of consumer goods fell by 1.6 percent in October, compared to the price in the same month last year. In comparison with the October last year, food price declined 1.8 percent last month.

According to the report, while the price of cooking gas dropped by 29.5 percent. Rice decreased 13 percent.

It is expected that Cambodia experienced a year of deflation in 2009, with consumer prices down by an average of 1 percent. During the global economic recession, the food and fuel cost have fallen from their highs of mid-2008.

According to the figure, it show that in July prices decreased by 3.9 percent and then by 2.9 percent in August, then by 2.3 percent in September compared to those months last year.

Based on the basket of 135 goods used to evaluate the Kingdom’s CPI, it is foretasted that the prices would increase slightly for the whole year.

Inflation increased last year, reaching more than 20 percent at its height in July and August, spurred the rise in global commodity prices, particularly oil.

The reduction in prices in 2009 follows record-high inflation last year that reached a peak of 25.7 percent in May 2008.
