Opposition Plans Demonstration for Textile Workers

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy says he plans to gather garment workers together in a demonstration, after about 2,000 gathered for a strike in front of the June Textiles factory outside Phnom Penh. The factory, which sits on the main road leading to the airport, burned down in March, costing the company millions of dollars and leaving many workers without pay. Workers said they hoped to block the airport road Sunday night, as the prime minister and other leaders returned from an Asean summit in Indonesia, but were dispersed by riot police. Council Approves Wage Bumps for Factory Workers

Factory workers will earn a small increase in wages beginning in March, labor officials said Monday, following a meeting of representatives from government, factories and unions. The Labor Advisory Committee, which arbitrates issues in Cambodia’s turbulent factory sector, approved an increase in bonuses from $5 to $7 a month if laborers do not miss a day of work. It also approved a bump of $0.25 for meals in the case of overtime, and a “seniority” wage increase from $2 to $11 per month. Continue reading
