International Court Rules on Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
The International Court of Justice in The Hague on Monday court has ordered Thailand and Cambodia to immediately withdraw soldiers from a disputed border area where they clashed earlier this year. The court also ruled that both sides allow in observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to help prevent new hostilities and declared the disputed border area between Thailand and Cambodia a temporary demilitarized zone. Court Issues Summons for Opposition Over Finance Report
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has received yet another court summons from Cambodia, this one over a complaint filed in 2007 over a missing financial report to the Ministry of Interior. Political Solution for Sam Rainsy Return a Must: Analysts
Analysts say that with no more legal options available in a criminal case against Sam Rainsy, a political solution must be found ahead of upcoming elections. The Supreme Court this week upheld criminal charges against the opposition leader, who was found guilty of racial incitement and destruction of property for uprooting border markers near Vietnam in 2009. Sam Rainsy remains in exile and faces two years in prison for those charges, along with an additional sentence of 10 years for posting a map of the border on his party website that the government said was false and constituted disinformation. Restoration of Immunity Eludes SRP Lawmaker
The National Assembly has yet to restore parliamentary immunity for opposition lawmaker Mu Sochua, following a defamation case against her last year, and officials indicated Monday the procedure is stuck somewhere between the legislative body and the Ministry of Justice. Mu Sochua, a Sam Rainsy Party representative for Kampot province, had her immunity stripped by the Assembly in 2009, after was sued by Prime Minister Hun Sen for defamation. She was later ordered to pay court fines and damages, effectively closing the case. Continue reading
