Nuon Chea Team Files Complaint Against Hun Sen, Others

Defense lawyers for jailed Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea on Monday filed a complaint in the national courts against Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior Cambodian officials for alleged interference at the UN-backed court. The complaint follows the resignation earlier this month of UN investigating judge Siegfriend Blunk, who said public statements by Hun Sen and others in opposition to two cases at the court made it too difficult for him to proceed with his work. In their complaint, Nuon Chea’s lawyers allege that Hun Sen, top members of the Cambodian People’s Party, ministers and others were infringing on the pursuit of justice by refusing to appear for testimony at the tribunal or speaking against cases at the court. Leading Researcher Calls on UN to Investigate Tribunal Judges’ Office

The head of the Documentation Center of Cambodia on Wednesday called for the UN to take “decisive action” to investigate the office of investigating judges at the Khmer Rouge tribunal, following the abrupt resignation of its international judge on Monday. The Documentation Center is a major researcher of Khmer Rouge atrocities, providing thousands of documents that have made the tribunal possible. Chhang Youk, director of the center, said the resignation of German judge Siegfried Blunk—who cited government statements against further indictments as his reason for quitting—required the UN to “restore the reputation” of the court. Long Hours, Low Wages Hurt Working Voters: Unionist

A leading union representative says Cambodian workers need help organizing ahead of polls as the country gears up for local elections next year. Election processes are difficult for factory laborers because of the amount of days and hours they work and the low wages they earn, Chea Mony, president of the Free Trade Union, told “Hello VOA” Thursday. “We have all obviously seen that workers’ wages are very low…so they need to work overtime to fulfill all the tasks in feeding their lives each month,” he said.
